THE BREWIN CHARITY
If you have not made yourself familiar with the
origin of the Charity, may I suggest that you look up
(1) the references to the matter in my annual reports for
1904 (or 1905), 1907 and 1910 under the heading "Charitable
Funds*, (2) my letter to the Colonial Secretary in 1910 in
which I offered to the Government the sum subscribed by my
friends (C.S.0. 4945/1910), and (3) the correspondence
between me and the Government in 1932, (4) also the Trust
Deed.
On reading the Mui Tsai Commission's report, I noticed
that all knowledge of the Russell Report of 1883 had vanished
by 1934, and as a guide for your successors in this case,
it might be prudent to insert the words "C.S.0. 4945/1910.
"Trust Deed dated 17th October 1911" under the heading in the
Annual Report.
The real origin of the Charity is to be found in a
memo. I drew up previous to 1910, perhaps in 1907, for
circulation among my Chinese friends. If a copy of this
happens to be attached to my first letter to the Colonial
Secretary in 1910, or if one can be found in your office
papers, I shall be grateful if you can have it copied for me.
